Further controversy as NZ Waka plans are scuttled

June 20, 2007

A traditional Maori Waka (boat) was planned to accompany the Emirates Team New Zealand racing yacht to the start of the America's Cup final competition until, it was claimed by some, Alinghi boss Ernesto Bertarelli refused permission for the plans to proceed. As defender of the America's Cup, the Swiss team are able declare the racing rules and veto certain conditions and propositions.

Team New Zealand later defused the situation somewhat by saying that it as not Bertarelli's decision to cancel the waka escort. Instead they said that the waka accompaniment would not take place due to logistical difficulties. Whatever the real reasons, it is clear that tension continues to build between the two teams ahead of the start of the competition this weekend.

As defender's of the cup, Team Alinghi were basically able to define the terms of the competition. There has been some quibbling over whether or not yachts may be substituted in the case of damage during the competition. In the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions released today it is specified that either team is allowed to substitute their yacht but only if it has been sufficiently damaged such that it cannot compete in the next scheduled race. Teams are also permitted to make one change to their boat that would require a new measurement cretificate to be released.
