Spanish Comeback

May 16, 2007

Desafío Español 2007 proved today that they deserve to be in the semifinals as they defeated Emirates Team New Zealand by a convincing 1 minute 14 in the third match of the best-of-nine series. The win marks their first against New Zealand in the Louis Vuitton Cup and it's sure to boost their confidence for the remaining semifinal matches. Interestingly, the Spanish yacht was issued a new measurement certificate yesterday meaning that changes were made, possibly to improve performance on the upwind legs where the Kiwis have outperformed the Spanish in earlier races. Emirates Team New Zealand still lead the series by 2-1 but the Spaniards have shown that the battle isn't over yet.

In the other semifinal grouping, Luna Rossa Challenge beat BMW Oracle Racing by 31 seconds to put them ahead by 2 matches to 1. Once again the Italians took an early lead but unlike in yesterday's match the American's weren't able to catch them back up again.
